Atlanta Education Fund Leads The Way

Atlanta Education Fund is an independent education organization focused on accelerating and sustaining student achievement in public schools by enhancing the community's capacity to lead, support, monitor and advocate for effective education reforms.

After transitioning to a new leadership team, an initial assessment of their infrastructure identified that they had an outdated and unsecured server and that their network was running very slowly thus inhibiting their progress. "As a start-up nonprofit, it does not make sense to hire someone to manage and maintain our systems," said Melissa Solomon, Operations Director, Atlanta Education Fund (AEF), "Nor does it make sense to purchase a lot of hardware that we would then have to store, backup, update and secure."  TechBridge presented various options to the group, and AEF chose a virtual environment.

"A completely virtual environment allows our team to be out in the community where they need to be with the technology that allows them to be the most effective."  said Solomon.

TechBridge created AEF's infrastructure and transitioned all team members' laptops and smart phones to the new system within a couple of days. Using Hosted Exchange, AEF staff can access email any place that has an Internet connection. TechBridge's hosting services gives AEF flexibility, reliability, and business continuity, all at a cost-effective price.  This leaves AEF open to focus on what they do best: education reform and community engagement. Read the
full story.

AEF recently rounded out their infrastructure by signing up for TechBridge’s Scheduled Services program - an ongoing, regularly-scheduled preventative computer, network and printer support at an all-inclusive, fixed price to maintain a stable and productive computing environment.

MedShare Wins Technology Award

L to R: Alton Adams, Partner, Accenture and A.B. Short, Co-Founder and CEO, MedShare International

At the TechBridge Digital Ball on May 10, 2008 in front of 1,200 guests, the 2008 Technology Innovation Award, given by Accenture, was awarded to MedShare International.

MedShare International redistributes unused medical supplies and equipment to developing nations and economically-challenged regions in the U.S. To prevent indiscriminate dumping of supplies, an automated, customized, precise web-based inventory cataloging and ordering system was needed. MedShare partnered with GA Tech's School of Industrial Engineering to resolve the inventory management challenge via technology similar to that used by food banks. The result was an online inventory system, updated every three hours, enabling recipients to see available resources. The online system allows MedShare to spend less time entering orders, and more time determining specific needs of hospitals so appropriate equipment and supplies are sent in a timely manner.

We also congratulate our two finalists, American Cancer Society and Southwest Christian Care, who also received a Judges Honorable Mention.  Click to watch or read more about these three organizations.

We salute all 2008 applicants for using technology to further their mission in our community.  Applications for the 2009 TechBridge Technology Innovation Award will be accepted beginning in September 2008.

Volunteer Spotlight

Frank Pitchford, AGL Resources

The collaborative volunteer program, which kicked off in March 2008 between TechBridge and Cobb Works, is designed to train adults in basic and intermediate computer skills. Frank answered our call for volunteers to not only develop a curriculum, but also to teach the course.
Consistency in the attendance of computer coaches for each class is invaluable, and Frank was there at the beginning and for every class thereafter - serving as both an instructor and coach, filling in at short notice when other instructors were called out of town.

Beyond his involvement with Cobb Works, Frank also volunteers with Computers for Youth, Atlanta, coaching 6th grade students of low income schools and their parents during Family Learning Workshops, where students are equipped with a computer to take home and the skills to know how to use it.

We thank Frank for his involvement - his
personality, skill and patience in working with adults and kids shines through each time he volunteers. It's only thanks to the commitment and enthusiasm of folks like Frank that TechBridge is able to provide its Member nonprofits with these technical resources they need.
