At Digital Ball® 2008, Accenture announced the winner of the 2008 TechBridge Technology Innovation Award:
MedShare International
MedShare International redistributes unused medical supplies and equipment to developing nations and economically-challenged regions within the U.S. Each year, the U.S. healthcare system discards over $6.5 billion in medical supplies and equipment due to procedural excess, regulatory requirements or production overages. Much of the discarded resources are incinerated, but approximately two million tons end up in landfills each year.
The goal of MedShare is to match resource abundance with need. To break the cycle of dumping supplies indiscriminately, an automated, customized, precise internet-based inventory cataloging and ordering system was required. MedShare partnered with Georgia Tech’s School of Industrial Engineering to resolve the inventory management challenge via technology similar to that used by food banks. The result was an online inventory system, updated every three hours, enabling recipients to see what resources are available to help them better serve their patients. The online system allows MedShare personnel to spend less time entering orders, and more time determining the specific needs of hospitals so appropriate equipment and supplies are sent in a timely manner. American Cancer Society
American Cancer Society (ACS) is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service. Its Relay for Life is now the world’s largest fundraiser, held in 4,900+ communities world-wide with 3.5 million participants raising more than $435 million for combating this insidious disease.
With 5,000 Relay for Life events annually, information must be available and accessible 24/7 to millions of volunteers nationwide. In September 2006, RelayForLife.org was launched as an e-community for volunteers, survivors and advocates for ACS. RelayForLife.org is built on the Drupal platform, using one content manager. Drupal is free, packaged software, enabling an online community, discussion site, e-commerce site, resource portals, social networking sites, and more. Since launching RelayforLife.org, 27,000 users have registered and the site draws 200,000+ visits/month. Volunteers create personal pages, blogs, share event photos, and access message boards. This online community empowers volunteers to share information, resulting in better events yielding higher fundraising totals and a better volunteer experience. Learn more at www.relayforlife.org.

Southwest Christian Care
Southwest Christian Care (SCC) provides high quality and compassionate care and support to terminally ill patients, children with disabilities, seniors in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and their families. It provides services at no cost to its clients and no insurance is required. All funding for programs and services comes from individuals, supporting organizations, grants and fundraising events.
SCC’s Annual Awards Banquet and Auction has grown to an excess of 1,500 participants, creating a need to efficiently manage registration, seating, auction items, sales and billing. To meet these needs it implemented Auction Maestro Pro by MaestroSoft Corporation, which enabled efficient management of data related to event participants, donors and allowed personnel to quickly consummate sales of auction items. To process winning bids faster, SCC implemented qCheck to pre-scan credit cards, reducing post-auction bottlenecks at check-out. 75%+ of the banquet’s attendees pre-scanned their credit cards, virtually eliminating checkout lines and reducing errors on processing charges by 25%.
